How many attempts are allowed for JEE Main?

JEE Main is held twice a year (January and April sessions). A candidate can attempt it in three consecutive years, effectively up to six sessions. Class 12 completion year determines eligibility. Verify the current window on the NTA notification.

What is the eligibility for JEE Main?

You must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There is no minimum-marks bar just to sit the exam, but NITs/IIITs require 75% (65% SC/ST) in boards for admission.

What percentile is needed to qualify JEE Main for JEE Advanced?

The cut-off is category-wise and changes yearly, but only the top 2,50,000 rankers in Paper 1 become eligible to register for JEE Advanced. Scores are reported as NTA percentiles, not raw marks. Check the official cut-off each year.

Is JEE Main enough for admission to NITs and IIITs?

Yes. NITs, IIITs and centrally funded institutions admit through JEE Main ranks via JoSAA/CSAB counselling. IITs, however, require you to clear JEE Advanced after qualifying JEE Main. Seat allocation depends on rank, category and choices.

How difficult is JEE Main?

JEE Main is highly competitive, with well over a million candidates each year. Difficulty is moderate compared to JEE Advanced, but the large applicant pool makes rank pressure high. Consistent PCM preparation across two years is the realistic expectation.

Is coaching necessary to crack JEE Main?

Coaching is common but not mandatory. Many students qualify through self-study, NCERT plus standard reference books and mock tests. What matters is disciplined problem-solving practice. Evaluate your own learning style rather than assuming coaching guarantees a rank.
