What this field is

Quantum technology applies quantum mechanics to computing, secure communication, sensing and materials — quantum information and computation, quantum optics, and hardware platforms such as superconducting and photonic qubits. In India there is no full-length undergraduate quantum degree: the honest entry route is a B.Sc./B.S. in physics or maths, or a B.Tech in CSE/ECE/EE, followed by a postgraduate or research programme. AICTE and the National Quantum Mission developed a B.Tech MINOR in Quantum Technology alongside an M.Tech curriculum — so at undergraduate level quantum is a minor or elective track, not a degree of its own.

Why India is investing

The Union Cabinet approved the National Quantum Mission on 19 April 2023 with an outlay of ₹6,003.65 crore across 2023-24 to 2030-31, targeting quantum computers of 50–1,000 physical qubits and inter-city quantum key distribution over 2,000 km. Four thematic hubs already operate — computing at IISc Bengaluru, communication at IIT Madras, sensing and metrology at IIT Bombay, and materials and devices at IIT Delhi.
